The history of the Mineral Resources Institute (MRI) dates back to 1978, when the management of the then Ministry of Water, Energy and Minerals hatched the idea of training middle cadre personnel to serve the mining sector. With that in mind 61 form six leavers were identified and placed in the Mineral exploration camps in Bukoba and Kyerwa in Kagera Region, during the programme named Mineral and Ground Water Exploration (MGWEP).The Bukoba camp was carrying out geochemical stream sediments sampling in the whole of Kagera Region with the aim of identifying various mineral geochemical anomalies especially in the gold and base metals group. This was a UNDP supported project.
